District also covers
Alaska and Hawaii
The jurisdiction of the Portland District includes Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Alaska, Hawaii and the Panhandle of Texas. The district office and warehouse is located in Troutdale, OR (Eastern suburb of Portland, OR). The district also has a sub office and warehouse in the southern suburbs of Denver as well as a sub office in Amarillo, TX.
While the district covers a rather large territory (better than 1.6 million square miles or approx 45% of the USA), the concentration of industry is entirely different from the Central or Eastern areas of the country. In the West, we mostly have open space, with the majority of the population and industry concentrated in the Pacific Northwest and California. Over the preceding 10 to 15 years, our business has come from a fairly even split between Utility Power Station maintenance and Paper Mill maintenance.
While the West may not be overly blessed with industry in general, it does have something going for it that we are hoping to capitalize on, namely coal .. and a lot of it. The Peabody Group alone shipped 125 Million Tons of Low-Sulfur Coal out of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming last year. While this coal is destined for plants all over the USA, due to the rising cost of transportation it's a safe bet that utility companies will prefer to build new coal generation as close to the fuel source as possible.
